When testing changes the plan
How the Next Level Ground evolved
At Black Ravioli, product development rarely follows a straight line and never stops.
Most ideas begin simply.
A question.
A small observation.
A “what happens if…?”
Over the past two decades our products have followed the same basic principle: provide a defined path for unwanted energy to leave the system, rather than trying to isolate everything from everything else.
Drain it.
Don’t trap it.
That thinking led naturally to what became the Next Level Grounding Feet.
They work well. Very well.
Placed beneath equipment, they provided a clear route to disperse the noise. Timing improved. Low-level detail became easier to follow. The presentation felt calmer and more coherent.
We were ready to launch.
Curiosity got in the way
But as always, curiosity got the better of us. Feedback suggesting lighter equipment responded well to weight on top to when supported by BR products
During final listening tests we began experimenting with placement.
Not underneath.
On top.
At first it was simply practical.
No lifting heavy components.
No balancing three or four supports.
No uneven weight distribution. No worrying about uneven shelves, blocked vents or screw heads.
It was easier.
But then something else happened.
It sounded better.
Following the energy
Energy travelling through a component enclosure doesn’t distribute evenly.
It reflects.
It concentrates.
It gathers at boundaries.
Very similar to how sound energy behaves in a room.
By placing the ground directly on the casework, rather than supporting the chassis from underneath, we were coupling closer to where the energy naturally accumulates.
In other words, we were shortening the path.
Giving unwanted energy a more direct exit.
Less structure in between.
Less opportunity for reflection.
The effect wasn’t dramatic or “hi-fi spectacular”.
It was subtler than that — and therefore more convincing.
The system simply sounded less busy.
Less strained.
More settled.
More like itself.
Logic prevailed
Our grounding feet followed the principle of our legacy products.
But continued testing took us further, and logic prevailed.
If a simpler, more direct approach works better, that’s the approach we should take.
Unfortunately, this discovery came just before the official launch.
Only just.
Boxes were nearly labelled, videos were made, photography was done. Packaging was ready.
Changing course at that stage would have been inconvenient.
But ignoring what we were hearing would have been worse.
So we will be offering both.
The result: Next Level Ground
Next Level Ground sits directly on the equipment casework and couples through stainless steel pins when placed on the top corners of the enclosure.
No lifting.
No load-bearing role.
No careful positioning underneath.
Simply place and listen.
It’s more direct.
More predictable, more versatile. And, to our ears, more effective.
Sometimes progress isn’t about adding complexity.
Sometimes it’s about removing a step. Going round a problem in the process.

A natural next step
These products also mark another small change for us.
After more than twenty years designing and refining isolation and grounding solutions, we now supply directly to music lovers worldwide.
A smaller scale.
Closer contact.
Fewer layers between maker and listener.
The same approach as always.
Just more direct.
The results need to be experienced — preferably in your own system, with your own ears.
